The following excerpts taken from Trevor Loudon’s “Enemies Within” …current edition. The Populist Caucus was founded on February 11, 2009, in the U.S. House of Representatives by Democrat Bruce Braley of Iowa. The caucus originally included 26 other Democrats in the House. According to Braley: "The middle class is the economic engine of America. Unfortunately, it has seen tough economic times lately, and it’s time for a renewed emphasis on those issues that serve to strengthen the middle class and improve the lives of working families. That’s why I established the Populist Caucus to focus exclusively on these types of issues." Braley’s Caucus is basically “prairie socialism,” drawing from the “populist” movement’s widespread influence in the Midwest in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Braley wants higher taxes on the rich, socialized health care, more government education, protectionist trade policies and strengthened “consumer protection.” Of the Populist Caucus’ 28 members in its last published roster in 2010, 15 were also past or present members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
